Intensive, integrated programmes to identify likely deadly stalkers can be hugely effective, according to data quoted by by Magnus Linklater in today’s Times.
If [UK] police and social services studied techniques now routinely used in countries such as America, Canada and Finland, but which are radically different from those deployed in Britain, 80 per cent of the deaths that are likely to happen over the next three years could be prevented. And since, on average, two women die each week in this country at the hands of a current or former partner, that is a substantial claim….Mosaic20, a computerised model that assessed the likelihood of an attack, placed it on a scale of one to ten and measured it against nationally compiled statistics. So accurate did their predictions become that San Diego, where such attacks were common, was persuaded to set up a family justice centre, where anyone believing that they may be at risk can go for expert assessment and, if necessary, protection. The centre has been instrumental in reducing the domestic murder rate from 12 a year to just one.

Hi
I take it the ‘family’ justice centre set up in San Diego was also visited by male victims of DV? So can we assume the San Diego domestic murder rate that greatly reduced from 12 a year to just one also included a reduction in male deaths also.

“In 2001, women accounted for 85 percent of the victims of intimate partner violence (588,490 total) and men accounted for approximately 15 percent of the victims (103,220 total).”
Source (US figures).
I’d expect that male victims would also be welcome, but would be very much in the minority.
That is a shocking American statistic here in the UK it is approx 2:1. I went to Layton Bevans web site, it is based in Wales which may explain his comments?. Having examined a number of research papers, generally the outcomes are on par for the US and UK, do you have any other such sites or additional information you could send me?

I can never get used to posting I notice I have missed of murder rate in regards to the figure I quoted. Also intimate partner violence here was found to be almost equal.

I keep looking for statistics to confirm that on average two women are indeed murdered by their partner each week and come up blank. Could you direct me to a site where this statistic can be confirmed? It just seems an unlikely high figure.
Can’t find precisely the original source on the web, but it is widely quoted, eg: http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/News/PressReleases/PressReleaseArchive/2005/061005DomesticViolenceConference.htm
And given that there are about 800 murders in the UK each year, if about 1/8 are domestics (which actually seems lowish) then it wouldn’t be surprising.
