If the human race disappeared
… what would happen. This website of the book sets it out – I was taken by the conclusion that in 20 years our common vegetables would have reverted to unpalatable forms, which makes sense when you think about it: there’d be pretty strong selection pressures, and a lot of happy herbivores in the meantime.

I’ve just finished reading the book, and can highly recommend it. The website gives you the “big hitting” effects of a planet without humans but the actual book is a lot more subtle and surprising, dealing with what happened to various species after previous extinctions, and the effect humans had when they reached different parts of the globe. There’s also some fascinating studies of places that humans have abandoned – the DMZ between the Koreas, a town in Northern Cyprus and of course Chernobyl.

Thanks – I’ve just put in a hold request at the library – more soon(ish).
