Have been struggling to find a way to convert a 24K BMP (bitmap) scan file to a JPEG, or at least anything of reasonable size (none of the free online converters seemed to be able to handle it), and eventually found Irfan, which looks like a very handy programme that may also solve some of my other conversion problems. And it is freeware!

Yes, as PC programs go, Irfanview is your absolute best bet. (geekiest comment ever)
It rocks; I really wish there were a Mac version. And if you want a free alternative to Photoshop, check out The Gimp. It rocks also.
Whilst travelling with a very small PC I used something called “Advanced JPEG Compressor”; also free.
I also noticed the ‘free’ Microsoft Live Photo editor which I used a couple of times.
