Carnival of Feminists

Break out the champagne…

… for the 18th Carnival of Feminists is now up, on Ink and Incapability. And it is a beauty.

There are some great ideas there – the South African anti-rape pill (for men, of course); some great controversies – what’s women’s role in creating sexist men? and, some great accounts of women’s victories, including those of a young retail assistant who could well and truly stand up for herself.

Do check it out, and as ever, please help to spread the word!!

Got your linking cap on?

Don’t forget that the deadline for the next Carnival of Feminists is coming up fast (on Sunday night).

Clare’s had her call for submissions up for some time. “Has feminism gone to far?” is one of the topic’s she’s set, so if your indignation gene has had inadequate exercise lately, now might be the time to let that DNA rip.

She’s also particularly interested in posts on women in religion, and on what might be called the “feminist wars”. I’m sure there’ll be something about the recent “blowjob war”, but it would be nice to get beyond that…

I’m sure it is going to be a great one, so do make sure you’ve put in your submission(s)!

Carnival of Feminists

Carnival of Feminists … drumroll please

The Carnival of Feminists No 17 is now up on Bitch| Lab, and it is one cornucopia of delights. I was particularly taken with the post about Flappers and feminism, about the exploitation of smuggled workers, and astonished by the news that female athletes are being made to take pregnancy tests before competing. But no doubt you’ll have your own favourites.

The “official” summary:

Themes covered:
1. The virtues of being mouthy, talking back, refusing norms of politeness, etc.
2. Explorations of Carol Hanisch’s original meaning behind the popular
phrase, ‘the personal is political.’
3. Solstice Sex Positive Feminist Mini-Carnival, plus scattered notes on
the BJ Wars.
There are also beautiful, witty, and hilarious posts on motherhood,
reproductive rights, comic book fandom, movie and book reviews, violence
against women, critical readings of advertisements, body image, feminist
analyses of misogyny in rock music, and feminist takes on media and
culture, and more….

There are a lot of bloggers there I haven’t seen involved in the carnival, which is great!

Please help to spread the word…

Carnival of Feminists call for nominations

Hot off the press, the call for nominations for the Carnival which will be on Bitch | Lab on June 21 (next Wednesday). I’ve put an abbreviated version below, but do check out the link, particularly if you don’t know what happened to Hypatia…

Suggested themes:
1. Given what Carol Hanisch originally meant by the phrase, “the personal is political,” how to you see your work as a continuation of what Hanisch and our early second wave foremothers envisioned?
2. The virtues of being mouthy, talking back, refusing norms of politeness, etc. The philospher Hypatio was appointed to the highest academic position in Alexandria. When sexually harassed in her classroom she got mouthy and flung the 5th century version of a sanitary napkin at him, exclaiming that the joys of sex rather than those of philosophy were what was on the student’s mind….
3. Finally, it wouldn’t be a party at Bitch | Lab if there wasn’t some talk of sex positive feminism.

The deadline is June 20, only five days away … so GET NOMINATING…! (On the Blog Carnival form, or through carnival@pulpculture.org.)

Carnival of Feminists

The Carnival of Feminists is Up!

Apologies for being a day late in organising the publicity, but I must now tell you that the Carnival of Feminists No XVI is now up, and “the nut” has done a spectacular job.

It begins with some excellent thoughts on “disability feminism” – some real challenges there – then moves from Kenya, to Marx, to Batgirl. “Something for everyone” doesn’t really cover it. So do go and check it out, and if you haven’t yet, please spread the word!

Carnival of Feminists

Carnival of Feminists No XV

… is now up on Self Portrait As, and Holly has done a spectacularly good job of a fortnight with some big feminist issues and events.

Among the posts that particularly took my fancy was one on a student’s attempts to get recognition for women mathematicians from history, and Aunt Hattie’s take on the prospects of mature-age female students in the academic world.

But do go out check out the whole thing; you’re sure to find something to provoke thought and anger. And please help to spread the word!
