Carnival of Feminists

Drumroll please …

The new Carnival of Feminists, No 60, is now up on Unmana’s Words, and a powerful collection it is.

I’m very pleased that the Carnival has visited India for a second time – it is great to get a different perspective and focus.

But don’t waste time here – do go over there and check it out!

Carnival of Feminists

Carnival of Feminists No 59

Welcome to the Carnival of Feminists, which begins with an apology, for the hiatus since the last, which was due to my disappearing under a deluge of work, from which I’m slowly extracting myself.

So there’s more than a month of nominations here, and I decided the best thing to do was to collect them, to allow a new host a managable run.

And the next host will be Unmana’s words, on July 9. She kindly came asking if I needed hosts. You can use the nomination form to send links to her, or email her at unmana AT gmail DOT com.

(But I still need more hosts – if you’re interested, whether a “veteran” feminist blogger, or a “newbie”, or somewhere in between, please drop me a line, natalieben AT gmail DOT com.)

So, to a veritable cornucopia of feminists posts – and how to organise them? Well I’ve decided to do something different this time – to test the effects of serendipity. What’s below is, more or less, the order in which the nominations arrived; which might produce some interesting juxtapositions…

(Although I have by and large eliminated multiples from the same blog, in the interest of not allowing “swamping”. I’ve chosen the first one from each blog – following on the theme of allowing Lady Luck to do her stuff.)

To begin let’s be cheerful with Tali, who concludes, in an exploration of decades of women and motorcycles, that Ladies Prefer Vespa .

Moving into more serious territory, on Feminist Philosophers, Jender looks at a yet another rule for breastfeeding mothers. You have to wonder how the human race survived before the job of expert in childhood was invented.

Madeleine Begun Kane presents her own inimitable style view of Hillary and Obama, after the race was won.

Ann Bartow recovers some feminist history with a clip from an interview of Margaret Sanger on 9/21/57.

And a reminder that for some American women, not much has changed: Holly Ord presents Anti-Choice Oklahoma .

Getting even more subversive, you can meet The Female Sex Agent posted at Agent of Desire, which is “all about claiming back female sexuality for women sick of objectification.”

Nine Deuce concludes that The First Amendment is only sort of cool.

Cruella find that there’s Trouble in Comedy-Land.

Womanist Musings presents East Vs. West – The Feminist Divide.

Cara gets angry about claims of Faulty Feminist Introspection .

Carnival of Feminists

Drumroll please … Carnival of Feminists No 58

There are many ways to arrange a Carnival of Feminists, and since we’re not getting seriously into middle age, in carnival editions at least, it is hard to find a new one, but in the Carnival of Feminists No 58, Hops has created a delightful method of arrangement (with help from her 13-year-old sister).

As always there are some wonderful posts, including an interesting reaction to the burqa and and an interesting example of a “joke” about gendered language.

But don’t waste time over here – do go over there and check it out!

And should you be in Sheffield tomorrow for Fem 08 – sorry you need to have booked already since it is entirely sold out with, I’m told, a huge waiting list – do look me up and if you’re interested in hosting the carnival let me know. I’m chairing a session on grassroots feminist media, with speakers Jess McCabe from The F Word, which hosted Carnival 35, Gill Court and Charlotte Cooper from Subtext, and Red Chidgey from the Feminist Activist Forum.

(And you don’t have to be British, or in Sheffield, to volunteer to host the carnival – I’m looking for hosts from every corner of the globe. You can be a new blogger, or a veteran, or somewhere inbetween. And if you consider yourself feminist I probably will too. Don’t be shy!)

Carnival of Feminists

Carnival of Feminists No 57

I traditionally offer a drumroll to announce a new Carnival of Feminists, but I feel, since No 57 is on Pandemian*, where issues and tales are not thumped down on the table, but crept upon, slyly, wittily, until you burst out laughing at an inappropriate moment (as when web browsing on the bus), I feel like I need something different – a trill, a shriek then a belly laugh perhaps… there’s a wonderful range of posts: why is it OK to lust after cake, but not sex? the birth control pill for men, could you trust them? and much, much more.

So don’t waste time over here, do please drop over there and check it out!

*And I can date myself as a blogger by saying I can still remember when she was Green Fairy.

Carnival of Feminists

Carnival of Feminists No 56

Drumroll, flourish of trumpets … the full works. The Carnival of Feminists No 56 is now up on Redemption Blues.

If you know the author, Chameleon, it won’t surprise you to know that it’s huge, it’s carefully thought out, and just generally spectacular.

Particularly notable is a fine collection of abortion-related posts, and broad coverage of the US election gender issues.

Carnival of Feminists

Carnival of Feminists No 55

Slightly belatedly – sorry, some time soon I’d really like a week that allows time to breath – but that means the drumroll has been mounting to really cacophanous levels, as it should be, for a spectacularly good Carnival of Feminists No 55 on Penny Red.

I couldn’t make the Million Women March, but after following all of the links there you’ll feel as though you were there, and there’s also a great link for US Women’s History Month.
