A new home for expats

Launching today is Guardian Abroad, a new Guardian site, designed to be a “home away from home” for expats. Very Web 2.0, there listings of blogs, lots of interaction, as well as original content, such as a rather nice piece about a British farmer relocating to France, and a small piece by yours truly about How could you live in Bangkok?

Declaration of interest – I work for the Guardian and know the people responsible for the project – hi Anna – but I do think it could develop into a nice little community…

Interesting media times…

A group of clearly and openly rightwing UK (well actually probably London) bloggers is started what looks like a seriously funded internet TV politics channel, 18 Doughty Street, which as Channel 4 points out (looking rather worried, as well they might be) isn’t subject to the same regulation as broadcast TV. They say they will be openly right wing but open to other voices – so it will be interesting to see how it works out …

And will there be a broadly leftwing equivalent?

Blogging/IT On other media

Why I am a Green

Over on Comment is free I’ve got a post written as I set out for the Green Party conference. It explains why I’m happy to be a Green and nothing about today has changed my view.

Also there I’ve a summary of some of the day one education discussion, which was enlightening if sometimes depressing.

I’m writing this from Hove beach. The sky is blue, the sun is warm, the seagulls are swooping and the dogs playing, but I’ll be back in conference soon. Honest.

Blogging/IT Miscellaneous

Only read if you are techno-fluent

Apologies for not being around very much – having major WordPress problems, with a log-in page just recycling but refusing to take me anywhere else.

I learnt this morning that it may be a specifically WP Version 2.0.3 problem, but I can’t upgrade to .0.4 because I’ve a problem with my Fantastico on my web host that defeated the overnight help desk. (Waiting to hear back from the day staff.)

Lest I should sound like a total technological klutz, I can say that I am writing this from my PDA with my very own new wireless network and new router. (Which I’m hoping will deal with the connection problems I’ve been experiencing.)

And the Linksys helpdesk is brilliant. The router bit required only one quick call, and getting the wireless working with the PDA took about an hour and they were wonderfully patient.

Isn’t technology wonderful…! (And yes my tongue may be in my cheek…)

Blogging/IT Environmental politics

From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs…

Always thought that was the magic bit of Marx, and I’m increasingly seeing bits of the Net working on that basis.

I’ve recently joined Camden Freecycle and seen exchanges of bicycles, sofas, computers, and rather less obvious objects between those who had them and no longer wanted them, and those who need them (quite often charities) but can’t afford to, or don’t want to, buy them new.

Such a brilliant, simple idea – sure a lot of this stuff could be sold on eBay, but a lot of people can’t be bothered with the hassle of that – dealing with couriers, post offices etc – and here if you’ve got something you want to get rid of, someone who needs it will come and get it from you.

I’m hoping to give my old computer to an environmental charity, if it meets their needs.

And environmentally, perfection…

There’s also apparently a London-wide list, but given the thousands of emails I get in a week, I can’t quite face that one.

French keyboards

To get @ you hit ALT and CONTROL and à (which is where zero is on an English keyboard).

A note to myself to the future, so I won’t again have to interrupt the woman at the next computer while she’s simulating a silent orgasm for the boyfriend at the other end of the webcam. Well I suppose it is a bar….
