My new baby…

redesign2 (2)

You might have noticed that I’ve been around here a little spasmodically lately, and anyone who knows me might have noticed that the bags under the eyes have hit the jawline; that’s in part because I’ve been involved in the major redesign of the Guardian Weekly, which has gone from tabloid to half-Berliner (“micro” I believe in American), as well as going full-colour in the European edition, and with the complete font and design change that went with it (so we again finally reflect the appearance of the Guardian).

Anyone in newspapers will appreciate that’s been rather a big job: I’ve written about the process, and about how the news gods had a good laugh at my expense, on the editors’ blog on Guardian Unlimited.

But, it’s out tomorrow, it doesn’t look half bad overall, and it’s done – just got to do it all again next week…

Here’s Jenny Cogan, our production editor, and the designer John-Henry Barac mugging it up for the cameras beside the press. J-H has also blogged about the process.

Update on Mike Newell

I expanded on my post below about Mike Newell’s sexist comments on Comment is Free this morning, then donned my hard hat in anticipation.

But I don’t know if it is getting more civil over there, or it is just my lucky day, but there’s quite a decent discussion going on, and only the odd bit of invective being thrown my way.

If you were there and got put off by the atmosphere, it might be worth giving it another go.

Why I am a Green

Over on Comment is free I’ve got a post written as I set out for the Green Party conference. It explains why I’m happy to be a Green and nothing about today has changed my view.

Also there I’ve a summary of some of the day one education discussion, which was enlightening if sometimes depressing.

I’m writing this from Hove beach. The sky is blue, the sun is warm, the seagulls are swooping and the dogs playing, but I’ll be back in conference soon. Honest.

Taking a pot shot at estate agents

Over on Comment is Free I’m saying why I think the new house seller’s packs in the UK are a good idea. Sorry if it is a bit middle-class dinner table, but who can resist taking a pot shot at estate agents?

You’ll also find me on the Guardian’s Comment is Free

Just because I don’t spend every minute that I’m awake tapping on the keyboard (quite), I’ve started up a new gig, writing on the Guardian’s Comment is Free. My first piece is on Critical Mass, and is attracting a satisfactory number of comments, if heading in the usual cyclists v. motorists v. pedestrians line. (I also put some pics up here a couple of days ago.)

Greetings…

…to anyone who’s visiting from today’s Guardian article on women bloggers.

Do check it out if you haven’t seen it; and if you read it on the web you won’t have to look at the uncomfortably large (for me anyway) picture in today’s print edition. (There’s a lot to be said for half-column mugshots…)
