Haven’t been over there for a while, but just caught up with John Hawks’ always excellent anthropology (and more) blog. Lots of goodies, but the one story that really caught my eye was a report on early modern humans in Africa – the three corners of Africa more or less, from around 100,000 years ago, all making (and presumably wearing necklaces made from pierced sea shells, in at least two cases coated with red ochre. It appears to be a significant difference between them and earlier humankinds.
